Applying
For Membership
Thank
you for your interest in applying for membership
on the Minnesota News Council. News Council members participate
in hearings and sit on News Council committees throughout the
year. News Council members are elected to a three-year term.
This term can be extended for three more years at the discretion
of the membership committee. Half of the 24 members of the News
Council are public members, i.e. employed outside the media.
Half the members are or have been members of the news media.
The hearing chairman is a former member of the state supreme
court.
The
mission of the Minnesota News Council is to promote
fair, vigorous and trusted journalism by providing a forum where
the public and the media can together examine standards of media
fairness. News Council members are expected to attend six public
hearings a year (which run 2-3 hours), and to participate on
one committee that meets as needed (four to eight times a year,
depending upon the projects the committee chooses to undertake).
We look for candidates who have the following characteristics:
News Council terms expire in March. The membership
committee normally interviews new candidates in early January.
If positions on the Council open up during the year, the membership
committee considers new applicants and nominates some for approval
by the whole Council.
Council
members are asked to make a tax-deductible financial
contribution to our annual fund-raising campaign (contributions
range from $25 to $1,000) so that when we approach others for
funds we can point to a perfect record of giving by our own
members.
